Helme Lodge is an estate in Kendal, consisting of 34 units. 7 of which form part of the Mansion House and annex.
The mansion house is a Grade II listed building.
The development benefits from a leisure centre which contains a gym, snooker room, sauna and male & female changing rooms.
Helme Lodge itself is a Grade Two listed Georgian mansion set in five acres of landscaped gardens.
The mansion was built in 1824 for William Dilworth Crewdson, one of the founders of the Kendal Bank and Chairman of the Kendal Canal Committee. The designer was Francis Webster, the first generation of a famous family that was synonymous with nineteenth century architecture in Kendal.
We owe a debt to the Crewdson family for the impressive buildings and the grounds including many fine trees sourced from around the world. In the late 1980s the Estate was acquired by Alfred McAlpine Homes Limited, and the mansion and ancillary buildings were converted into 12 apartments. Subsequently twenty-one cottages were built in the grounds in the estate’s kitchen garden. You may see how the estate looked prior to the conversion in a photograph in our Leisure Centre.
